DIY Outdoor Pillows

I'm in the process of finishing some deck furniture, and was in need of a bunch of outdoor pillows to go with it.  I made my own pillows to save money, and they turned out to be extremely easy.  Here's how you do it!

First, buy various colors and designs of outdoor fabric, as well as a few weather-resistant pillow inserts from a local fabric store.  These pillow inserts can be pricey, but they will ensure that your pillows will dry fast and not hold moisture after rainstorms.  The inserts I used were 16" x 16" in width, so I cut the fabric at 18" x 18" to allow for enough room on all sides.

Place the outside part of the two sheets of fabric to face each other, line them up correctly, and then pin them in place on three of the four sides.

Using a sewing machine and matching thread, sew the three sides together and allow 1/2" on each side for a strong seam.

One trick is to trim the corners of the pillows; this will reduce the amount of fabric in the corners and will allow them to be nice and sharp.

Then, turn the pillow inside out.  Using the tip of a pencil or a pair of scissors, push out all four corners.

Once this is done, you can slip the insert into the pillow, and then hand-sew the fourth side closed.

All done!  Each pillow shouldn't take you longer than 15-20 minutes.

I adore these pillows.  They look just as great as store-bought ones, but cost about half as much.  Can't wait to finish the deck furniture so that I can put them to use!
